April 29, 2006, 7:20 am From Natalie's funeral service:
Natalie has always been a warm, caring, and giving person. She told me on several occasions that she cared more about others than herself. I remember her very first summer at Camp Matawa at the closing ceremonies, Natalie received the special award for the most caring person out of hundreds of kids at camp. Any time one of the kids was having a tough time or felt home sick, Natalie was the first one there to console that person.
Natalie continues to give after her death. Briana and I decided to donate as many of Natalie’s organs as possible, as we knew that is what she would have wanted. As of yesterday, we were told by a member of the organ team that all of the transplant operations had been successful, and that at least six people have been given the gift of life, or least the hope of a normal life thanks to Natalie.
I will always carry with me many warm memories of Natalie. Some of my favorite memories will be our duck hunting trips on the Mississippi River with our good friends the Christopherson’s, Dean, Colt, and Conner. It took Natalie a couple of years before she actually hit a duck and knocked it down, and I will never forget how excited and happy she was to get her first duck. She also loved going to Wack’s Bar and eating “mini-tacos”, and exploring the islands and marsh where we hunted. Three years ago, Briana joined this family tradition, and now loves duck hunting as much as Natalie did, or maybe even more. I know that every fall when we make our annual trek to the river, Natalie will be with us and in our hearts.
I want to thank all of our family, friends, and neighbors for their prayers and support over the last couple of weeks. I also want to give a special thanks to the McFarland and Dane county EMTs, the staff at St. Mary’s Hospital, and the staff and students at the high school and middle school, and the staff at Gunderson Funeral Home. We are grateful to live in such a caring community.
Natalie, I will miss you forever. I know you are at peace.
Love,
Dad
